He also provides a wealth of skills that the residents of NORCAT tap into to help further develop their technology requirements and needs. With over 25 years of experience at NORCAT, Ed has been involved in the development of all of the products which define NORCAT as a Training and Innovation centre since 1996 and has kept NORCAT in the forefront of software development and information technology.
1990-1993
I graduated from Electronic Engineering Technology program at Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology. My focus was on Intel and Microchip microprocessor software development using machine language as my base language. This presented me opportunities after I graduated to develop some incredibly unique products for our local Science Center serious of exhibits. The exhibits range from reading human bio electrical data, reaction testing to simulated indoor Olympic triathlon.
1993-2000
Created Worldwide Production Inc. with a partner. Our company developed a series of products from plugins for developers, to electronic data acquisition controllers under the branded name X-Celerated Products. Our products were used world wide in HMI Devices to being part of control systems on the bridge of cruse and freight ships. Our company also had the opportunity to develop tabletop games for a restaurant chain in Australia, along with games used in marketing campaigns for drag racing to web site promotion.
1996-2022
Started my carrier with NORCAT as Lead developer for interactive training products. Developing in the days when CD where the medium and the internet was just beginning. to manifest into what we know as the internet today. During my career at NORCAT I was instrumental in developing our Training system, Learning Management Systems, Compliancy Systems, and Interactive Media. NORCAT gave me the freedom of learning and development with bleeding edge technology. This allowed me to understand where and when the technology could be used in training applications leaving us always on the cusp of leading-edge technology installations. Since 1998 one of my tasks was to stay current with XR technology. Although the technology was not ready for industry, allowing me to work and use these tools prepared me for when the technology was ready for industry. In 2013 I was able to create a development team that would specialize in VR / AR using the initial release of Oculus DK1 products. During this period, we also focus on building NORCAT products for devices that use IOS and Android.
2018-2020
With all the knowledge I had gained over the previous 20 years in XR technology and Application development in combination within the education sector I was tasked to engineer a simulation product for NORCAT to solve and internal need at our Fucunis Mine Site, the goal was to have a true to reality fire extinguisher training program in our mine. Using my team, we had created the product FiAR which was an augmented reality fire extinguisher training simulator. FiAR engineering process level up my expertise in the patent process, hardware technology design and deployment, augment reality software development, user experience for product packaging, plastic engineering for disposable products, manufacturing and support, sales, and shipping. The product also brought to me the processes for applying and registering for regulator numbers for the products Bluetooth, CE, FCC requirements. I also learned the processes of patenting a product. Through NORCAT I filed for 5 patents and was granted as Patent Inventor for the FiAR product in Canada, US, UK, Australia and South Africa.
